Press release from For Ukraine, for their freedom and ours!
This is the request of a column to be published in Le Monde dated January 31. It is signed, at the initiative of the association For Ukraine, for their freedom and ours!, by a collective bringing together for the first time, military personnel (including 5 generals and 3 senior officers) and representatives of civil society (academics, lawyers, writers, artists and association activists) who wish to raise awareness of the threats against Europe and our country if Putin is not defeated.
"The Ukrainian nation is in danger! " warn the signatories, who are asking France to " urgently provide " Ukraine with " the weapons and ammunition it needs to reconquer its entire territory ."
Russia is now supported by arms deliveries from the dictatorships of Iran and North Korea and can count on the support of China, while the military aid provided to Ukraine by its allies is beginning to run out. Faced with this situation, " a ceasefire enshrining Russia's control over Donbass, Crimea and their populations in exchange for illusory security guarantees is a decoy. Russia, once its arsenals are replenished, would be able to resume its offensive against European democracies ."
Europe must absolutely turn its defense industry as a priority towards Ukraine. The platform calls for the implementation in France of " an economic and industrial solidarity mechanism with Ukraine " that would act in five directions:
• increase the sale, manufacture and delivery of arms and ammunition;
• provide guarantees to arms manufacturers;
• equip ourselves, with our European partners, with a control body to ensure a strict embargo on the export of dual technologies;
• encourage the pooling of production tools, civil and military, in the service of defense;
• mobilize new financial resources for aid to Ukraine.
The signatories believe that " France's budgetary effort for Ukraine (around €2 billion planned for 2024-25) should be at least doubled, in order to re-establish parity with Germany, as a proportion of GDP " and stress that " these investments will benefit in the long term the improvement of France's defensive capabilities, in the face of increased risks of high-intensity conflict. "
" Peace requires the complete withdrawal of the Russian army from Ukrainian territory. Also, the means that Ukraine has lacked for two years must no longer fail it ," concludes the text, which counts among its first signatories:
